the PSA assignment

You will create a 40-60 second Public Service Announcement that highlights an issue important to you.  The goal of this project is to inspire your audience to action by employing sophisticated persuasive techniques and rhetorical strategies.

PART 1 – Assembling production team & developing proposal

• Request group members and report technology experience.

• Brainstorm and discuss topic ideas.

• Once groups are established, choose a topic.

• Submit a proposal that includes central research questions, preliminary

purpose, and a “call to action.”

PART 2 – Preproduction

• Do your research. Compile your research notes on a single document that you will submit to turnitin.com. These initial research notes are not a collaborative effort; each student is responsible for notes on at least three distinct sources, no matter the size of the group.  Your notes should include the source information as well as original notes on the source—NO CUT AND PASTE ALLOWED.  The research process is intended to inform you about your topic, but does not need to be included in your final PSA.

• Create a rough draft script and storyboard for your PSA.  Include information about all three tracks (visual, textual, and audio).“3 tracks” chart.

• Learn about/practice using camera, editing software, etc.

PART 3 – Production

• Film and edit your PSA! (You will share the first cut of your PSA, called the “rough cut,” to focus groups during class time in order to elicit feedback for your final cut.)

PART 4 - Post production

• Present the final cut of your PSA to the class.

• Write a “credits” list that includes the names and jobs of all the people who participated in your PSA as well as any sources you used for your final cut.

• Write a reflection about the project process and your personal experience.
